Why protect against ticks

Ticks (Ixodes ricinus) carry dangerous pathogens: Lyme disease in humans, babesiosis in dogs, piroplasmosis in horses. Prevention is the first line of defence for animals in woodland areas.

Repellent mechanism

Ticks locate hosts by chemotaxis (detecting CO₂ and body odours). Cade oil creates a powerful olfactory mask that disrupts these signals. Its phenolic compounds are also irritating to ticks on contact.

Application on animals

Preparation: dilute cade oil to 5–10% in vegetable oil.

Key areas: back line and flanks, around ears and nape, base of tail, lower limbs.

Frequency: before each outing in risk areas, or every 2–3 days for permanent grazing animals.

Limitations

Cade oil significantly reduces the risk of attachment but does not guarantee 100% protection. In very high-density tick areas, combine with daily animal checks and a veterinarian-prescribed external antiparasitic.
