Red mite biology

Dermanyssus gallinae hides by day in cracks of perches and nest boxes, emerging at night to feed on blood. It can survive up to 9 months without feeding. Signs: nervous/lethargic hens, drop in laying, pale combs, tiny red dots visible at night with a torch.

Eradication protocol

1. Empty the hen house of all litter and removable perches.
2. High-pressure clean all surfaces.
3. Let dry 24–48 hours.
4. Paint pure cade oil on all perches, joints, cracks and corners.
5. Repeat 10 days later to catch recently hatched mites.
6. Monthly maintenance: one application on perches keeps the hen house healthy.
