Recognising scaly leg

Scaly leg (Knemidocoptes mutans) shows as raised whitish scales, swollen crusty legs, sometimes lameness in advanced cases. Transmission is by direct contact between birds.

How cade oil works

  • Suffocating effect: blocks the mite galleries under the scales.
  • Antiparasitic effect: phenols are toxic for mites on contact.
  • Antiseptic and healing: speeds scale regeneration and prevents bacterial superinfections.

Treatment protocol

  1. Soak legs in warm soapy water 5–10 min, gently brush.
  2. Dry thoroughly.
  3. Apply cade oil diluted 50% in vegetable oil with a soft brush, covering entire leg up to the hock.
  4. Repeat 2–3 times per week for 3–4 weeks minimum.
  5. Isolate affected birds to prevent contamination.

Signs of recovery

After 2–3 weeks the crusts fall away and scales begin to regenerate. Pink bare legs are normal — new healthy scales are growing. Full recovery for old cases may take 2–3 months.
